now Pietole, village about 3 miles SE. of Mantua; commonly
identified with the ancient Andes, the birthplace of Virgil.
D. says that on Virgil's account Pietola is more renowned than any
other Mantuan village (or, according to some, than Mantua itself),
[Purg. xviii. 82-83].
