Sì tosto c[h]'a me parve ch'e' volasse,
E disse: «I' sì ti tengo in mia balìa».
Quella mi mise sopra gran fredore;
La terza Cortesia fu, san' dottanza;
La quarta, Compagnia, che fe' dolore;
La quinta apella l'uon Buona Speranza.

With his bow the God of Love pierced me
while I was gazing at a Flower that pleased me,
the Flower that Lady Courtesy had planted
in the garden of Pleasure. Love came
so quickly that it seemed to me he flew,
and said: "I have you in my power."
Then as was his pleasure, and no desire of mine,
he wounded me with five arrows.
The first, named Beauty, passed my eyes
and transfixed my heart; the second, Angel-Like,
gave me a bitter chill;
the third without doubt was Courtesy;
the fourth, Social Grace, caused pain;
the fifth is called Good Hope.

L'Amante e Amore
Sentendomi ismagato malamente
Del molto sangue ch'io avea perduto,
E non sapea dove trovar aiuto,
Lo Dio d'Amor sì venne a me presente,
E dissemi: «Tu·ssaï veramente
Che·ttu mi se' intra·lle man caduto
Per le saette di ch'i' t'ò feruto,
Sì ch'e' convien che·ttu mi sie ubidente».
Ed i' risposi: «I' sì son tutto presto
Di farvi pura e fina fedeltate,
Più ch'asses[s]ino a·Veglio o a Dio il Presto».
E quelli allor mi puose, in veritate,
La sua boc[c]a a la mia, sanz' altro aresto,
E disse: «Pensa di farmi lealtate».

Lover and Love
When I felt myself so drained
because of all the blood I'd lost
and did not know where to find help,
in a flash the God of Love was there
and said: "You surely know
that you have fallen into my hands
thanks to the arrows with which I wounded you;
thus, you must obey me."
And I replied: "I'm ready
to give you my true and noble loyalty,
greater than the assassin's to the Veglio or Prester John's to God."
And then, in truth, he put his lips
to mine and said without a pause:
"Be loyal to me."

L'Amante e Amore
Del mese di genaio, e non di mag[g]io,
Fu quand' i' presi Amor a signoria,
E ch'i' mi misi al tutto in sua baglìa
E saramento gli feci e omaggio;
I' son segnor assà' forte a servire;

Lover and Love
In the month of January, and not in May,
it was, when I took Love to be my lord
and placed myself completely in his power,
and swore homage to him.
And as further assurance, I gave him my heart
as a pledge, so that he would not worry
that I might not be true and loyal to him
and always hold him as my lord and master.
Then he took my heart and said: "Friend,
I am a very exacting lord to serve;
but truly I say unto you that the one who serves me
will never fail to win my favor,
and I will nourish him with good hope
until I satisfy his desire."

L'Amante e more
L'Amor, quando così m'eb[b]e parlato;
Ma primamente l'à nett' e parato,
Sì c[h]'ogn' altro pensier n'à pinto fore.
E po' mi disse: «I' sì son tu' signore,
Inanzi ch'io ti doni mia sentenza;
Ché molte volte ti parrà morire:
Un'ora gioia avrai, altra, doglienza;
Ma poi dono argomento di guerire».

Lover and Love
With a golden key Love locked my heart,
after he had spoken to me in that way;
but before all this he purified and prepared it well
so that he drove out every other thought.
And then he said to me: "Just as I am your Lord,
so are you my liege man:
now be sure your heart's not occupied
with anything but noble and true love.
And remember to bear patiently
the pain you will suffer because of me,
before I give you my verdict.
For many times you'll think you're dying:
one hour you'll be happy, another sad,
but then I'll give you a remedy to get well."
