Costretta-Astinenza 
 
  Astinenza-Costretta venne avanti, 
E disse: «E' vien comeco in compagnia, 
Ché sanza lui civir no·mmi poria, 
Tanto non pregherei né Die né ' santi; 
  E me e sé governa co' sembianti 
Che gli 'nsegnò sua madre Ipocresia. 
I' porto il manto di papalardia 
Per più tosto venir a tempo a' guanti. 
  E così tra noi due ci governiamo 
E nostra vita dimeniàn gioiosa, 
Sanza dir cosa mai che noi pensiamo. 
  La ciera nostra par molto pietosa, 
Ma nonn-è mal nes[s]un che non pensiamo, 
Ben paià·noi gente relegïosa». 
 
 

Forced Abstinence 
 
      Forced Abstinence came forward 
and said: "He comes as my companion,  
because without him, I could not provide for myself,  
no matter how much I might pray to God and the Saints. 
      He governs himself and me according to the ways  
his mother Hypocrisy taught him.  
I wear the mantle of hypocrisy  
in order to gain my rewards more quickly. 
      And thus we look after each other  
and lead a happy life,  
without ever saying what we really think. 
      Our appearance seems very pious,  
but there's no evil act that we don't conceive,  
although we appear to be religious folk." 
 

Dio d'Amor e Falsembiante 
 
  Lo Dio d'Amor sor[r]ise, quando udìo 
Astinenza-Costretta sì parlare, 
E disse: «Qui à gente d'alt' affare! 
Dì, Falsembiante, se·tt'aiuti Idio, 
  S'i' ti ritegno del consiglio mio, 
Mi potrò io in te punto fidare?». 
«Segnor mio sì, di nulla non dottare, 
Ch'altro c[h]'a lealtà ma' non pens' io». 
  «Dunqu' è cotesto contra tua natura». 
«Veracemente ciò è veritate, 
Ma tuttor vi met[t]ete in aventura! 
  Mai i·lupo di sua pelle non gittate, 
No·gli farete tanto di laidura, 
Se voi imprima no·llo scorticate». 
 
 

The God of Love and False Seeming 
 
      The God of Love smiled when he heard  
Forced Abstinence speak in this way,  
and said: "We've got some big shots here!  
Tell me, False Seeming, may God help you, 
      if I keep you on my council,  
will I be able to trust you at all?" 
"Yes, my Lord, don't worry about a thing,  
for I don't think of anything but loyalty." 
      "Therefore, this is against your nature." 
"To be truthful, this is the truth,  
but nonetheless you are putting yourself at risk! 
      No matter how many bad things you do to it, 
you'll never remove a wolf from its hide,  
unless you skin it first." 
 

Dio d'Amore 
 
  Amor disse a' baroni: «I' v'ò mandato 
Perch'e' convien ch'i' ag[g]ia il vostro aiuto, 
Tanto che quel castel si' abattuto 
Che Gelosia di nuovo à già fondato. 
  Onde ciascun di voi è mi' giurato: 
Sì vi richeg[g]io che sia proveduto 
Per voi in tal maniera che tenuto 
Non sia più contra me, ma si' aterrato. 
  Ch'e' pur convien ch'i' soccorra Durante, 
Chéd i' gli vo' tener sua promessione, 
Ché trop[p]o l'ò trovato fin amante. 
  Molto penò di tòr[r]elmi Ragione: 
Que' come sag[g]io fu sì fermo e stante 
Che no·lle valse nulla su' sermone». 
 
 

The God of Love 
 
      Love said to the Barons: "I've sent for you  
because I need your help  
until that castle is brought down,  
the one that Jealousy recently built. 
      Since each one of you is my sworn ally, 
I ask you to act  
in such a way that the castle  
may no longer stand against me, but that it be leveled to the ground. 
      For I must help Durante, 
since I want to keep my promise to him,  
for I have found him to be a very refined lover. 
      Reason tried very hard to take him away from me;  
but that one was so wise and tenacious and constant  
that Reason's speech had no effect at all."

Perciò ch'i' non volli anche sua contezza: 
Sì era dritto ch'i' me ne pentesse. 
  Ben disse ch'i' le feci gran carezza 
Sotto dal pin, ma non c[h]'ancor vedesse 
Che Povertà no·m'avesse in distrezza. 
 
 

The Council of the Barons 
 
      The Barons met together  
to decide how they would proceed,  
or which gate they would attack first.  
On this they were all in agreement, 
      except for Wealth, who pledged  
that she would neither trouble herself for me,  
nor would she do any harm to the castle,  
no matter how many prayers or orders 
      might be given,  
because I never wanted her friendship:  
it was right that I should repent for that. 
      Indeed, she allowed that I showed her great respect  
under the pine tree, but she still saw  
that Poverty had me in the straits.

The Battle Plan of the Barons 
 
      They went over the plan with the God of Love  
and told him they agreed  
that False Seeming and Forced Abstinence  
would give Bad Mouth the coup de grace. 
      Generosity and Lady Courtesy would make a deal  
with that one who knows the old dance well, 
and Mercy and Sincerity would give problems  
to Resistance who is so fierce. 
      And then Delight and Well-Hidden will advance  
and deal a mighty blow to Modesty  
so that she cannot get up. 
      And Boldness will make fun of Fear,  
and Safety should flay her so severely  
that she'll no longer be found there.
