Il Fiore (cxxxv)

Falsembiante

  Falso-Sembiante disse: «Per merzede
Vi priego, Mala-Bocca, c[h]'ascoltiate;
Ché, quand' uon conta pura ver[i]tate,
Molt' è folle colù' che no·lla crede.
  Vo' sete ben certan che·ll'uon non vede
Che 'l valletto vi porti nimistate;
Sed egli amasse tanto l'amistate
Del fior quanto vo' dite, a buona fede,
  Egli à gran pezza ch'e' v'avrïa morto,
Avendogli voi fatto tal oltraggio;
Ma non vi pensa e non si n'è acorto,
  E·ttuttor sì vi mostra buon corag[g]io,
E servireb[b]evi a dritto e a torto
Come que' ch'è cortese e prode e saggio».

False Seeming

      False Seeming said: "For mercy's sake,   I beg you, Bad Mouth, listen to me;   for when one tells the honest truth,   he who does not believe it is very foolish.

      You may be quite sure there's no evidence   that the young lad bears you hatred:   if he were to love the friendship   of the Flower as much as you say, and loyally,

      he would have killed you a long time ago,   since you did him such a wrong.   But he doesn't see things that way, nor he is prepared to,

      and he always shows you kindness   and would serve you in good and in bad   as someone who is courteous and valorous and wise."
