Se non se in parole trapassante. 
Ched i' sia di danar ben procacciante? 
I' n'ò assai per farne belle spese. 
  D'avere in me maniera bella e gente,

In tal maniera che·ssia sofficiente. 
  Se voï mi parlate di malia, 
Ch'ella non può tornar già cuor di gente:

Fair Welcome 
 
      Fair Welcome began to speak  
and answered with well-chosen words:  
"My noble Lady, I thank you very much  
for having been generous to me with your art; 
      but the facts of love are not clear to me,  
because I know them only through fleeting words.  
Why should I be an avid procurer of money?  
I have enough to make some nice purchases. 
      It's toward acquiring noble and charming ways for myself  
that I wish to apply my powers,  
so that I may be well-supplied. 
      When you say to me that magic powers  
cannot change the hearts of people,  
let anyone believe it who so desires, but I consider it to be folly!" 
 

Bellacoglienza 
 
  «Del bel valetto che vo' mi parlate, 
In cui tanta vertute è riposata, 
Sed e' la s'à, per me gli sia chitata: 
S'i' l'amo, i' l'amerò come mi' frate. 
  Ma, per le gioie ch'e' m'à presentate, 
La mia veduta no·gli fia vietata; 
Ma venga il più che puote a la celata, 
E sed e' piace a voi, sì 'l ci menate. 
  Ma' che sia fatto tosto san' dimora, 
Perciò che Gelosia non può sofrire 
Ched ella stea sanza vedermi un'ora: 
  Ché molte volte si parte per gire, 
E 'l diavol, che di notte in lei lavora, 
Sì·lla fa·mantenente rivenire». 
 
 

Fair Welcome 
 
      "You've spoken to me about the handsome lad,  
the one in whom so much virtue is found;  
if he has this virtue, let him keep it for my sake:  
if I love him, I will love him like a brother. 
      But, because of the jewels he gave me,  
he should not be prevented from seeing me;  
but let him come as often as he can in secret,  
and if you like, then bring him here. 
      But this should be done quickly and without delay,  
since Jealousy cannot allow  
an hour to pass without checking on me; 
      for many times she starts to go away,  
and the devil, who works in her by night,  
makes her come back immediately." 
 

La Vec[c]hia e Bellacoglienza 
 
  La Vec[c]hia sì la va rasicurando, 
E dice: «Sopra me lascia la cura 
Di questo fatto; non aver paura, 
Chéd io il saprò ben andar celando. 
  E gisse Gelosia tuttor cercando 
Qua entro, sì seria grande sciagura 
S'ella 'l trovasse, ma i' son sicura 
Che poco le varria su' gir sognando». 
  «Dunque potete voi farlo venire, 
Ma' ched e' si contegna come sag[g]io, 
Ch'e' non pensasse a·ffar nes[s]un ardire». 
  «Figl[i]uola mia, e' non fece anche oltrag[g]io 
I·nessun luogo, ch'i' udisse dire, 
Ma troppo il loda l'uon di gran vantag[g]io». 
 
 

The Old Woman and Fair Welcome 
 
      The Old Woman thus goes about reassuring her  
and says: "Let me take care  
of this matter; don't be afraid,  
for I'll know how to keep it hidden. 
      And should Jealousy continue to snoop around  
inside here, it would be a great disaster  
if she were to find him, but I am sure  
that her fantastications will do her little good." 
      "Therefore, you can have him come,  
on condition that he behave wisely  
and that he not think to do any bold deed." 
      "My darling daughter, he never went beyond good measure  
anywhere, at least that I heard about;  
in fact, people greatly praise him for his excellence." 
 

L'Amante e la Vec[c]hia 
 
  Al[l]or sì fecer fine al parlamento. 
La Vec[c]hia se ne venne al mi' ostello, 
E disse: «Avrò io sorcotto e mantello 
Sed i' t'aporto alcun buon argomento 
  Che ti trarrà di questo tuo tormento?». 
I' dissi: «Sì, d'un verde fino e bello; 
Ma, sì sacciate, non fia san' pennello 
Di grigio, con ogn' altro guernimento». 
  D'Amico mi sovenne, che mi disse 
Ched i' facesse larga promessione, 
Ma 'l più ch'i' posso, il pagar soferisse: 
  Avegna ch'i' avea ferma 'ntenzione 
De dar ben a coste', s'ella m'aprisse, 
Che quell' uscisse fuor della pregione. 
 
 

Lover and the Old Woman 
 
      At that point they ended their conversation.  
The Old Woman came to my house  
and said: "Will I have coat and mantle,  
if I bring you some good remedy 
      that will take away your sorrow?" 
"Yes," I said, "and they will be in a noble and beautiful green;  
but, you should know, they'll have a gray  
lining and every other sort of ornament." 
      I remembered that Friend told me  
that I should make a generous promise,  
but that I should delay payment as long as I can; 
      although I had good intentions to compensate her well,  
if for me she would unlock the door  
to release that lady from confinement. 
 

La Vec[c]hia 
 
  La Vec[c]hia disse allor: «Amico mio, 
Queste son le novelle ch'i' t'aporto: 
Bellacoglienza salute e conforto 
Te manda, se m'aiuti l'alto Dio; 
  Sì ch'i' ti dico ben ched i' cred' io 
Che·lla tua nave ariverà a tal porto 
Che·ttu sì coglierai il fior dell'orto». 
(Questo motto fu quel che mi guerìo). 
  «Or te dirò, amico, che farai: 
All'uscio c[h]'apre verso del giardino, 
Ben chetamente tu te ne ver[r]ai; 
  Ed i' sì me ne vo 'l dritto camino, 
E sì farò c[h]'aperto il troverai, 
Sì che·ttu avrai il fior in tuo dimino». 
 
 

The Old Woman 
 
      The Old Woman then said: "My friend,  
this is the news I bring you:  
Fair Welcome sends you greetings  
and encouragement, so help me Almighty God. 
      Thus, I say to you that I believe  
your ship will arrive in such a port  
that you will pluck the Flower in the garden." 
These are the words that healed me. 
      "Now I'll tell you, my friend, what you'll do:  
you will come very quietly  
to the gate that opens to the garden; 
      and I will go along the straight road  
and make sure you'll find the gate open,  
so that you will have the Flower in your possession."
