  1. DANTE DA MAIANO A DANTE ALIGHIERI 
   
  Per pruova di saper com' vale o quanto 
    lo mastro l'oro, adducelo a lo foco; 
    e ciò faccendo, chiara e sa se poco, 
    amico, di pecunia vale o tanto. 
    Ed eo, per levar prova del meo canto, 
    l'adduco a voi, cui paragone voco 
    di ciascun c'have in canoscenza loco, 
    o che di pregio porti loda o vanto. 
  E chero a voi col meo canto più saggio 
    che mi deggiate il dol maggio d'Amore 
    qual'è, per vostra scienza, nominare: 
    e ciò non movo per quistioneggiare 
    (ché già inver voi so non avria valore), 
    ma per saver ciò ch'eo vaglio e varraggio.

  1. DANTE DA MAIANO TO DANTE ALIGHIERI

   The goldsmith, to test the value of gold,
brings it to the fire; and so doing, establishes 
whether it is worth little or much. And I, 
to test my poem, bring it to you whom I call 
the Paragon of all who are numbered 
among the intelligent, or are praised 
or honoured for merit.
    And so, writing with all the skill I can 
command, I ask you to tell me, from your 
knowledge of the subject, what is the greatest 
suffering caused by love. Not that I wish to 
join with you in argument --knowing that I 
should be no match for you-- but I want to know 
what I am worth now and what I shall be worth.
