LVI
Per una ghirlandetta
ch'io vidi, mi farà
sospirare ogni fiore.
I' vidi a voi, donna, portare
ghirlandetta di fior gentile,
e sovr'a lei vidi volare
un angiolel d'amore umile;
e 'n suo cantar sottile
dicea: «Chi mi vedrà
lauderà 'l mio signore».
Se io sarò là dove sia
Fioretta mia bella [a sentire],
allor dirò la donna mia
che port' in testa i miei sospire.
Ma per crescer disire
mia donna verrà
coronata da Amore.
Le parolette mie novelle,
che di fiori fatto han ballata,
per leggiadria ci hanno tolt'elle
una vesta ch'altrui fu data:
però siate pregata,
qual uom la canterà,
che li facciate onore.

LVI
Because of a garland
I saw, every flower
will make me sigh.
Lady, I saw you wearing a garland
of sweet flowers, and over it
a little angel hovering,
a gentle angel of love,
who said in his delicate song:
'Whoever sees me
will praise my Lord.'
When I am where my fair Fioretta
may hear me, I will say
that my lady wears my sighs
around her head.
But my lady will come
crowned by Love,
to increase desire.
These new little verses of mine,
which have made a ballata of flowers,
have taken, to adorn themselves,
a garment given to another:
so I pray you, lady,
be gracious
to whoever sings them.
