Quarto arguebatur sic: Si terra non esset inferior ipsa aqua, terra esset totaliter sine aquis, saltem in parte detecta, de qua queritur: et sic nec essent fontes neque flumina neque lacus; cuius oppositum videmus: quare oppositum eius ex quo sequebatur est verum, scilicet quod aqua sit altior terra. | (13) Fourthly, it was argued thus: If earth were not lower than water, the earth would be entirely waterless, at any rate in the exposed portion about which we are inquiring; and so there would be no springs, nor rivers, nor lakes; the opposite of which we see. Wherefore the opposite of that from which this follows is true, namely, that water is higher than earth. |
