Commentary Inf VIII 86-96

In response to the angelic defiance ([Inf VIII 82-85]), Virgil suggests a parlay, to which the leaders of the defensive forces consent, while making threats against Virgil and leaving Dante very much afraid that these threats will be consummated and he will be left to try to make his way 'home' alone. That prospect was so dismal that it now, merely remembered from the safety of his writing desk, urges him to share his discomfort with us.
