For the sense of this verse, Benvenuto (DDP Benvenuto.Par.XXV.1-9) looks back to the fami, freddi o vigilie that Dante claims to have suffered on behalf of his poem.  See [Purg XXIX 37-38]: 'O sacred Virgins, if fasting, cold, or sleepless nights / I've ever suffered for your sake....'
