An almost exact contemporary of Gratian was Peter Lombard, the 'Master of the Sentences' (his major work was the compendium Sententiarum Libri, presenting an elaborate overview of dogmatic theology).  He says, in his preface to that work, that, like the poor widow in Luke's Gospel (Luke 21:1-4), he hopes to make his small contribution to God's treasury.
