For the suggestion that Dante's loss of Virgil resembles Aeneas's loss of Anchises, see the remark of Earl Jeffrey Richards cited in Hollander (Holl.1983.1), p. 143, n. 47, and Hollander (Holl.1993.1), p. 317, n. 298, pointing to the appositeness of Aeneid III.710-711: 'I lose my father, Anchises,... best of fathers, you leave me to my weariness.'
