Commentary Purg XXX 48

This verse is a translation of Dido's climactic utterance admitting that she has fallen in love with Aeneas, thus breaking her vows of chastity to her dead husband, Sichaeus (Aen. IV.23): 'Agnosco veteris vestigia flammae' (I recognize the traces of the ancient flame).  For a lengthy consideration of this celebrated verse see Mercuri (Merc.1971.1).
