Commentary Purg XXVIII 32-33

Beginning with Tommaseo (DDP Tommaseo.Purg.XXVIII.25-27), commentators have suggested a source in Ovid (Metam. V.388-391) for the shaded garden here, the Sicilian scene of Proserpina's rape (see [Purg XXVII 49-51]), where the forests above the pools in the hills of Enna keep them protected from Apollo's rays.
