Commentary Purg XIX 79

As Singleton (DDP Singleton.Purg.XIX.79) observes, this is the first time we learn that some penitents do not have to spend penitential time on every terrace, since the nameless speaker (we will learn that he was a pope at [Purg XIX 99]) assumes, from Virgil's request for help, that both of these newcomers are saved souls exempt from the sin of avarice (or of prodigality) who are ascending to a destination higher up the mountain without having to stay here.
